Live-Action INSPECTOR GADGET Film in the Works at Disney
October 7, 2019A live-action film reboot, based on the 1980s animated series, Inspector Gadget, is currently being adapted at Disney.
The animated series that launched the character, Inspector Gadget, lasted nearly four seasons, spanning 86 episodes, from 1983-1986. It follows a bumbling bionic police inspector, voiced by Don Adams, who stumbles about on his cases versus schemes set in place by the evil Dr. Claw, while his niece, Penny, and dog, Brain, secretly do the real investigative work and solving.
The first full-length animated feature film for the character came in 2002, Inspector Gadget’s Last Case: Claw’s Revenge. Maurice LaMarche voiced Gadget in a story that follows the inspector, bound for retirement, on his final case in a vicious new plan against his nemesis, Dr. Claw.
This won’t be the first live-action adaptation of the animated series. In 1999, Matthew Broderick took on the role of Inspector Gadget, but did not return for the 2003 sequel, Inspector Gadget 2, which starred, French Stewart.
You can currently catch episodes of the then-relaunched animated Inspector Gadget series on Netflix, via Universal Pictures, which lasted 52 episodes, from 2015-18. It picks up following the feature animated film, where Dr. Claw returns, forcing Gadget (voiced by Ivan Sherry) out of retirement, along with Penny and Brain’s open (known) participation.
Aladdin‘s Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich will both produce the upcoming live-action reboot, while Saturday Night Live writer/actor, Mikey Day and writer Streeter Seidell, will both pen the script.
