Bob Gale Not Interested in a Fourth ‘Back to the Future’ Sequel
February 6, 2025Whenever Bob Gale, the co-creator and co-writer of ‘Back to the Future’ with Robert Zemeckis, is asked about a fourth installment in the series, he simply replies, “F*ck you!” It will, for now, seemingly remain a trilogy.
Backstage at the Saturn Awards, he was asked about his remaining aspirations after the massive success of the series. “I’m having the best third act of life that anybody could imagine,” Gale said, joined by stars Christopher Lloyd and Lea Thompson. “People always ask, ‘When are you making Back to the Future 4?’ And we say, ‘Fuck you!’ You can quote me on that.”
Gale explained that after making three great films, fans kept wanting more. Instead of another sequel, they created Back to the Future: The Musical, which is now touring worldwide.
Beyond North America, the stage adaptation is set to open in Japan, Germany, Australia, and even on Royal Caribbean Cruises. “So, my God, Back to the Future is going to be a part of my life forever. Who could ask for anything more?” he said.
Nominated for two Tony Awards, Back to the Future: The Musical wrapped up its Broadway run last month after 18 months at the Winter Garden Theatre, grossing $1.9 million.
“The story remains just as fun and entertaining on stage as it was on screen,” The Hollywood Reporter wrote in its review, praising the production’s technical spectacle—complete with dazzling projections, special effects, and immersive lighting and sound. “It feels like a theme park attraction in the best way possible, and as Broadway spectacles go, this one truly impresses.”
Now in its fourth year, the musical continues its run on the West End.
