Popcorn Frights Sets Final Drive-In Horrorshow Event with S.E. World Debuts
July 30, 2020 Off By Michael StagnoThe final wave of world premieres for the Popcorn Frights ‘pop-up’ summer drive-in horrorshow is coming and the twin-billing includes an original graphic novel live-action adaptation and a unique spin on the blood-sucking genre, but also two surprise short film debuts as well.
The upcoming Popcorn Frights Drive-In Horrorshow: Part III – The Final Friday will serve as the conclusion to the series. Extraordinary circumstances and challenges because of COVID-19 led the initiative, which the Popcorn Frights group saw as an opportunity to continue its mission in bringing the community together to celebrate the best in genre cinema. As a reminder, tickets for both films are $20 each, per automobile and sold separately. Moviegoers are encouraged to practice ‘social distancing’ in bringing masks and have proper hand-sanitizing products at the ready.
At 8pm (ET), the southeast world premiere of slasher, Random Acts of Violence, debuts on the pop-up screen. The story is based on the original graphic novel, Random Acts of Violence, from writers Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray and artist Giancarlo Caracuzzo. It follows famed comic book writer Todd Walkley (Jesse Williams), who is trying to overcome a case of writer’s block. He decides to take a road trip with his wife, Kathy (Jordana Brewster), Ezra (Jay Baruchel), his best friend, and their assistant, Aurora (Niamh Wilson). As the journey goes, the group begins to discover numerous and horrific massacres along the way, as the events which unfold play right out of the pages of Walkley’s comics.
“Thanks to Shudder and Popcorn Frights for screening Random Acts of Violence,” said Baruchel, who directed the film. “Watching this movie from a car should make the experience all the more-terrifying! Hope everyone is staying safe and healthy. Enjoy the movie!”
Shortly after the first film, around 10pm, comes the world premiere of Ten Minutes to Midnight, an over-the-top gorefest. It stars scream queen Caroline Williams, as Amy Marlowe, a punk rock DJ, who is bit by a rabid bat and becomes a vampire. A raging storm is keeping her stuck inside the studio, along with Nicole Kang, William Youmans, Adam Weppler, and Nicholas Tucci, in one of his last on-screen performances, when all Hell breaks loose.
The film comes courtesy of filmmakers, Erik and Carson Bloomquist, who said, “The TMTM team is elated to world-premiere at Popcorn Frights. Our film’s old-school aesthetic throwbacks and exploration of a faded golden age make a debut at the drive-in especially poetic. Popcorn Frights is right on the pulse of the genre and fueled by a palpable understanding of the importance of communing at the cinema (especially in times like these). We can’t wait to launch our night terror with their audience.”
The last drive-in event will also include two world premieres of short films as well in, No One is Coming, from brothers Matthew and Nathaniel Barber, and Cottonmouth, by Zach Wincik and Danny Salemme, which stars A Nightmare on Elm Street alum, Heather Langenkamp.
The third and final installment of the Popcorn Frights Drive-In Horrorshow is set for Friday, Aug. 14, 2020, once again at the Mass District, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., while the sixth annual Popcorn Frights Film Fest, which was rescheduled, is tentatively slated for Oct. 1-4.
