Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus to Produce ‘The Goonies’ Sequel
February 14, 2025Nearly 40 years following the initial release of the cinematic classic ‘The Goonies’, a sequel has been announced.
Warner Bros. has enlisted Potsy Ponciroli to pen the script for the upcoming sequel. Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus are set to produce the film alongside Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario for Amblin Entertainment, with Lauren Shuler Donner serving as executive producer. A director has yet to be attached to the project.
The original Goonies, based on a story by Spielberg, was directed by Richard Donner from a screenplay by Columbus. The film follows a group of kids who embark on a treasure hunt to save their homes from a looming property development. While it earned $125 million worldwide at the box office, its true legacy lies in its lasting cultural impact, beloved characters, and iconic catchphrase: “Goonies never say die!”
The 1985 classic launched the careers of young stars Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, and Martha Plimpton. While no details about the sequel’s plot or cast have been revealed, Quan expressed openness to reprising his role after winning his 2023 Golden Globe. However, he admitted it seemed unlikely following Donner’s passing in July 2021.
“Sadly, we lost the captain of our ship, who I love dearly, and I really don’t know if there will be Goonies 2,” Quan said at the time. The sequel announcement follows years of speculation, including Plimpton dismissing the project as “not real” in a September 2024 Instagram post.
