The acclaimed duo behind the highly praised Die series, Kieron Gillen (known for The Wicked + The Divine, Immortal X-men) and Stephanie Hans (renowned for Secret Wars 1602: Witch Hunter Angela, Black Bolt), are joining forces again for their inaugural original graphic novel endeavor titled We Called Them Giants. Revealed exclusively by Gizmodo, this sweeping post-apocalyptic narrative is slated for release by Image Comics in November.

Gillen and Hans, celebrated for their breakout success with Die in 2018, have garnered widespread acclaim and numerous awards for their collaborative efforts. Following the immense success of Die, the duo sought to embark on a new creative journey, crafting a more intimate and self-contained narrative.

“Following Die, we felt compelled to explore something entirely different—a story that’s smaller in scale yet profoundly impactful,” shared Gillen. “During the lockdowns, amidst solitude with my cats, I found inspiration in contemplating the dynamics of relationships between beings of disparate intelligences. From there, the vision of a feral girl amidst desolation and encounters with giants emerged, igniting our creative momentum.”

We Called Them Giants centers on Lori, thrust into a desolate world where she must navigate the remnants of society while grappling with existential threats, including the enigmatic giants. Hans emphasized the joy of artistic exploration in bringing Gillen’s emotionally charged narrative to life, promising a tale that is both epic and introspective.

“We Called Them Giants presents a fresh take on the post-apocalyptic genre, blending elements of nostalgia, contemplation, and grandeur,” remarked Hans. “Working alongside Kieron has been immensely rewarding, allowing me to unleash my creativity in designing a visually stunning world that complements the narrative’s depth and complexity.”

Eric Stephenson, Publisher and Chief Creative Officer at Image Comics, lauded the project, recognizing Gillen and Hans’s unparalleled synergy and the novel’s transformative impact on the medium.

We Called Them Giants will be available in hardcover format at local comic book shops starting October 30, with wider distribution to independent bookstores and major retailers on November 12. Additionally, digital editions will be accessible across various platforms, ensuring the story reaches audiences far and wide.
