NYCC 2019: Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell to Unearth (a New) EVIL DEAD Film
October 4, 2019Filmmaker Sam Raimi and horror/sci-fi superstar Bruce Campbell have announced at New York Comic Con, a new film in the Evil Dead franchise is en route, but will have a new director and no Ash as the star.
The film will no-doubt be based on the one that started it all, The Evil Dead (1981), which tells the story of five friends who travel to a cabin in the woods, where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons. The film was actually rebooted six years later, though titled as a sequel, Evil Dead II. Though it did feature noticeable differences, as Ash (Campbell), the lone survivor of an onslaught of flesh-possessing spirits, holes up in the cabin with a group of strangers, while the demons continue their attack. The trilogy came full circle in 1992 with Army of Darkness, which accidentally spirals Ash to 1300 A.D., where he must battle an army of the dead and retrieve the Necronomicon, aka the Book of the Dead, so he can return home.
The first, real horror attempt at rebooting the series, eliminating the horror of both The Evil Dead and Evil Dead II, came in 2013 with, Evil Dead, which told the story of five friends who head to a remote cabin to help their friend, a recovering addict. They soon discover the Book of the Dead and it leads them to unwittingly summon demons from the woods.
Starz even adapted a recently-ended Ash vs. Evil Dead series, which ran for three seasons (2015-18), while Dynamite Entertainment has even adapted numerous comic book series as well, which goes to show the popularity of Raimi’s franchise.
No news yet as to when production begins, but keep it here for updates!
