Both Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are returning as Ed and Lorraine Warren for a third installment in The Conjuring franchise.

The third sequel will be called, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. The story reveals a chilling story that shocked even the Warrens. It started with a fight to save the soul of a young boy and then took them beyond anything they could ever comprehend. The film will mark the actual first time in U.S. history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defense in court.

The first two films in the franchise, The Conjuring (2013) and The Conjuring 2 (2016), were directed by James Wan, who will take a backseat to Michael Chaves in the third one, while serving as an executive producer.

Each film has told a different origin story of a demon or spirit, while the Warrens are sent in to solve the problem. The Conjuring saw the Warrens attempt to rid a family of an evil entity that was attached to the mother, while in The Conjuring 2, the Warrens traveled to London to take on a highly-publicized case involving a single mother and her children, whose flat was haunted.

Wan has formed a universe for the series, which also includes standalone prequels, The Nun (2018) and The Curse of La Llorona (2019), as well as the fan-favorite possessed doll trilogy in Annabelle (2014), Annabelle: Creation (2017) and Annabelle Comes Home (2019). The entire franchise has generated nearly $1.8 billion at the global box office.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It releases on Sept. 11, 2020.
