JURASSIC WORLD Nearly Included Another Hybrid Species in the Film
June 3, 2020The 2015 blockbuster, Jurassic World, almost had a second hybrid creature, one whose genetics included DNA from both the Stegosaurus and a Triceratops, which was appropriately named, Stegoceratops, per an Instagram reveal by concept artist Ian Joyner.
That’s right, producers were close to including a second species to spotlight the Dr. Frankenstein-ish capabilities of the chief scientist at InGen, Dr. Henry Wu, played by BD Wong, who created the film’s antagonistic alpha predator, the Indominous Rex. The I-Rex was a primal DNA cocktail of species, including that of the Tyrannosaurus Rex, Velociraptor, Carnotaurus, Giganotosaurus, Majungasaurus, Pycnonemosaurus, Quilmesaurus, Deinosuchus and Therizinosaurus, but also more modern species like a viper pit snake, cuttlefish and tree frog. The creature stood over 20-feet tall, 50-feet in length and weighed nearly 9 tons.
The Stegoceratops was featured briefly in the film, though it was not a physical showing, but rather a computer image on Dr. Wu’s computer. The herbivore is a staple, however, in the Jurassic World: Evolution video game. It travels in a herd and also includes six-different modification skins, like a jungle, coastal, alpine colors and, the most-frequently seen, the steppe. Though vulnerable on its sides and on its stomach, the creature is protected by a series of rigid plates along its spinal column, has a shield over its neck, spikes on its tail and two massive horns on each side of its face, which makes it a lethal creature in a running attack. It stands almost 18-feet tall, is 38-feet long and its weight is over 3 tons.
The third installment in the franchise, Jurassic World: Dominion, is currently filming and is tentatively slated for a June 11, 2021, theatrical release. Meanwhile, check out the short, Jurassic World: Battle at Big Rock, which bridges the gap between Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and the upcoming third film.
There is also an upcoming animated series in the works, which will be bound for Netflix in Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, about a group of campers stranded on an island … with, you guessed it … dinosaurs!
