An upcoming Netflix mobster biopic, written by Peter Landesman, has tabbed Will Smith in the lead role, in The Council.

The story follows an organized crime syndicate, which is run by seven black gangsters who operated out of Harlem, New York, in the 1970s. The men all dreamed that the revolutionizing drug game would help fund a self-sufficient African American city-state. Smith will play Nicky Barnes, dubbed, ‘Mr. Untouchable’, who partnered with the Italian Mafia to help spawn his own syndicate, specializing in the trade of heroin.

Smith will next star in Gemini Man, which releases in theaters, nationwide, on October 11. He is also set to revive his characters, Mike Lowery and Daryl Ward, in Bad Boys for Life and Bright 2, respectively.

There’s no news yet on when production begins, but the studio is currently seeking a director. Keep it here for all the casting updates and stay tuned!
