Two standouts from the hit Marvel film, Black Panther, are reuniting for an upcoming novel adaptation, Americanah, at HBO Max, in Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira.

The limited series will be based on the novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Americanah, which follows Ifemelu and Obinze, a young couple in love, who flee a military-ruled Nigeria for the West. Educated and beautiful Ifemelu lands in America, while thoughtful and quiet Obinze ends up in London, undocumented, because of post-9/11 protocols. The two reunite a staggering 15 years later in a newly-democratic Nigeria, reigniting their passion for each other and for their country.

“Through Americanah, Chimamanda brought the African female voice into mainstream consciousness in an unprecedented way,” said Gurira. “It is intellectually incisive, indicting, yet full of humor and riddled with humanity. She makes unheard voices familiar, universal and yet palpably specific. I am honored to bring her incredible novel to life on the screen.”

Nyong’o has her zombie comedy dropping later this year, Little Monsters, as well as her reprisal of Maz Kanata in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, while Gurira has been linked to the untitled Star Trek sequel.
