A new Rom-themed reimagining of the moon landing is coming, in the form of a limited series at IDW Publishing, by creators Chris Ryall and Luca Pizzari, Rom: Dire Wraiths.

The three-issue mini will center on the valiant astronauts from the monumental moon landing mission in 1969, which unfortunately brought the heroes in contact with the dreaded shape-shifting entity of the galaxy, Dire Wraiths.

The first issue, Inhumanauts, as the trio of American astronauts of Apollo 11 set foot on the lunar surface, a hitchhiker of the evil variety makes its way on board. Rom, the Spaceknight, is off protecting the universe, leaving the Earth Corp as the only line of defense for humankind.

“I knew I wanted to tell something out of continuity — last time people saw Rom, he was part of the big Unicron event that essentially shut down the old Hasbro Universe where Rom existed,” Ryall said. “And I knew people would wonder if this was a reboot or revisiting a continuity we said was closed or something else, so I opted for ‘something else’ by setting it in a time period we’d not visited with these characters before.”

The series will also include an accompanying backup story as a bonus, via creators Guy Dorian and Sal Buscema, which will cover what Rom is doing across the universe while the primary story is running.

Rom: Dire Wraiths #1 (of 3) goes on sale on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2019.
