IDW Announces Summer of SONIC THE HEDGEHOG via New Series and Creators

April 15, 2020 Off By Michael Stagno

Fans are gearing up for the ‘Summer of Sonic’ at IDW Publishing, thanks in part to a new creator, Evan Stanley, on the currently ongoing Sonic the Hedgehog series, which will also see a new miniseries, Sonic the Hedgehog: Bad Guys, spin out of it as well, courtesy of Ian Flynn and Jack Lawrence.

Stanley is set to both scribe and illustrate the currently-ongoing Sonic the Hedgehog series, picking up with the 33rd issue. The new arc will serve as a convenient continuation for current readers, while also being a great jumping on point for new ones. It will follow Sonic and Tails as the duo tries to solve their damaged ally, Omega, while Rouge, Shadow and Cream all commit to the Chao Races in an attempt to round up replacement parts for Omega.

Sonic the Hedgehog comics have been a constant source of joy and inspiration for me for well over 10 years and, the truth is, this opportunity is a dream I didn’t believe could come true,” Stanley said. “The world of Sonic has a truly amazing creative legacy, and I’ve always pushed myself to make my contributions as meaningful and worthwhile as they can be — and that’s more important than ever now. I hope I can deepen the world of IDW’s Sonic The Hedgehog comics, exploring new places and characters, while continuing to deliver exciting adventures about Sonic and his friends!”

Branching off of issue #33, per the creative team of Flynn and Lawrence, comes Sonic the Hedgehog: Bad Guys. The four-issue, limited series will center on Dr. Starline’s former evil assistant, Dr. Eggman. The scientist has aspirations in commandeering one of Eggman’s abandoned bases, but before he can get through the badniks, must enlist some familiar and unlikely help.

The releases of both Sonic the Hedgehog #33 and the launch of Sonic the Hedgehog: Bad Guys #1 (of 4), have been put on hold indefinitely, till after the COVID-19 pandemic.
