A subsidiary of NBCUniversal, Lark Productions, has earned the exclusive television distribution rights to Image Comics, Descender and Ascender, from the creative team of Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen.

The Descender comic series spanned over 32 issues from 2015-18. It was hailed as a ‘sprawling space opera’, which centered on a young robot, TIM-21, which struggles to stay alive in search of his best friend. As all androids have now been banned over the universe, galactic bounty hunters set out to find the last of them. All the while, the young robot’s cosmic odyssey pits humanity against life-annihilating and god-like robots.

Lemire’s literary universe expanded in 2019 with the launch of Ascender, the direct sequel to the initial series, which is currently ongoing, having formulated 11 issues so far. It tells the story, about 10 years following the conclusion of Descender, in a time where magic has superseded machinery. Mila, the daughter of both Andy and Effie, from the first series, spends her day exploring her planet, Sampson, while trying to avoid evil disciples of a powerful vampire witch, The Mother. When an old robot companion of her father’s shows up, things begin to change for her.

“The world of Descender and Ascender just keeps growing,” said Lemire. “Dustin and I are very happy to be working with Lark, to bring it to televisions screens as well. Their passion for the comics and devotion to telling the story the right way has us both very excited.”

Erin Haskett, president of Lark Productions, along with both Lemire and Nguyen, will serve as executive producers on the series.
