Creators of the multiple award-winning series, Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, have announced their exit from helming the next Star Wars trilogy, which was set to launch with the first film on December 16, 2022.

For Benioff and Weiss, the decision did not come from a lack of love for the franchise. In a statement made to the Hollywood Reporter, the duo stated, “Getting to talk about Star Wars with him (George Lucas) and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything. But there are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away.”

The (eventual) new Star Wars trilogy will serve as a separate storyline from the Skywalker Saga. The other films announced, one by Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios President, and Rian Johnson, director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, are still good to go, but no specific time frame has been set for those upcoming projects.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said, “We are not just looking at another trilogy, we’re really looking at the next 10 years or more.”

The future of the Star Wars cinematic universe has a bevy of upcoming installments, specifically, per Disney+ in, The Mandalorian, another season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, and the untitled Cassian Andor series as well.
