The first official trailer has released for the upcoming reboot of The Grudge and garners some eerily noticeable throwbacks to the original franchise.

The film, from producer Sam Raimi and director Nicolas Pesce, is set in the United States. It follows a detective (Andrea Riseborough) who investigates a series of suspicious deaths, which all stem from the same house, one that is cursed by a vengeful ghost that dooms anyone who enters with an equally as violent death as it suffered.

The rest of the lead cast includes: John Cho, Betty Gilpin, Lin Shaye, Demián Bichir and William Sadler.

The 2002 Japanese film, Ju-On, launched the previously English-adapted versions of the series. The Grudge released in 2004 and starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, who also returned for The Grudge 2 in 2006. The franchise rounded out with a Gellar-less The Grudge 3 in 2009.

The Grudge creeps into theaters on Friday, Jan. 3, 2020.
