The first trailer for Disney’s Mulan paves the way for its main character to leave her mark for pride of country.

The film will take place following a decree, as set forth by the Emperor of China (Jet Li), that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders. Hua Mulan (Yifei Liu), the oldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. However, she does it in disguise as a man, Hua Jun, and is tested every step of the way as she must harness her inner-strength and embrace her potential.

The film comes courtesy of director Niki Caro, whose international cast also includes: Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Nelson Lee, Li Gong, Jimmy Wong and Chum Ehelepola.

The upcoming live-action adaptation follows in the footsteps of the animated film, Mulan (1998), but both are based on the narrative poem, The Ballad of Mulan by Song Nan Zhang.

The theatrical release for Mulan is currently tabbed for March 27, 2020.
