The First Trailer for CANDYMAN Reimagining Dares You to Say His Name
February 27, 2020 Off By Michael StagnoThe upcoming Candyman reboot, per producer Jordan Peele and director Nia DaCosta, has released its first frightening trailer and the bone-chilling urban legend is again realized in the contemporary modern spin on the cult classic.
The film will center on the Cabrini Green neighborhood in Chicago’s housing projects, where inhabitants are terrorized by a word-of-mouth scary story in which a supernatural killer with a hook hand is summoned, should you say his name five times in a mirror.
Present day, a decade after Cabrini Green towers are torn down, a visual artist, Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his girlfriend, a gallery director named Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris), move into a luxury condos, which have replaced the previous building, along with other millennials.
As his painting career teeters on the brink of stalling, an encounter with a previous tenant of the Cabrini Green, William Burke (Colman Domingo), exposes Anthony to the tragically-horrific nature of the true story behind the Candyman phenomenon. In an attempt to revive his career, he channels the macabre details of the urban legend for a fresh spin for his paintings, which results in his sanity unraveling as a door to a complex past opens and a viral wave of violence ensues.
The film is based on 1992’s Candyman, which starred horror icon Tony Todd as the titular character. It followed a skeptical grad student (Virginia Madsen) in New Orleans who challenges whether the urban legend is true. It was inspired by Clive Barker‘s The Forbidden.
Candyman releases in theaters, nationwide, on June 12, 2020.
