A new limited animated series, Aquaman: King of Atlantis, from filmmaker James Wan, has earned the green light at HBO Max.

The new animated three-part installment is believed to serve as a bridge to the gap between 2018’s Aquaman and its upcoming theatrical sequel, as each of the three parts will be standalone adventures for Arthur Curry.

“He’s got a LOT of catching up to do. Luckily, he has his two royal advisors to back him up – Vulko, the scholar, and Mera, the water-controlling warrior-princess,” stated by HBO Max representatives at the 2020 Television Critics Association press tour. “Between dealing with unscrupulous surface dwellers, elder evils from beyond time and his own half-brother, who (still) wants to overthrow him, Aquaman is going to have to rise to the challenge and prove to his subjects, and to himself, that he’s the right man for the trident!”

The titular DC Comics character previously had four animated adaptations, two in 1967, The Adventures of Aquaman, which spawned into The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure and culminated with a massive teamup in 1977 and 1978, respectively, via The All-New Super Friends Hour and Challenge of the Super Friends.

Aquaman 2, starring Jason Momoa and Amber Heard, is currently slated for a holiday season release in 2022. The HBO Max streaming service is expected to launch this spring.

No news yet as to whether the theatrical cast members will voice their respective characters, but production is expected to begin in 2020. More news to come!
