Legendary comic book creator Stan Sakai is bringing his long-running series of Usagi Yojimbo to Netflix in an all-new and all-ages animated CGI series called, Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles.

That’s right, after a 35-year run, the fan-favorite samurai rabbit is finally getting the television treatment. The series, set in the future, takes place in a world which uses traditional Japanese methods and references, in conjunction with modern, high-technology. It centers on Yuichi, a teenage samurai and descendant of Miyamoto Usagi, a great samurai warrior. Yuichi is on a mission to become a true samurai and leads a ragtag squad of misfit heroes, including a bounty hunter, ninja, pickpocket and a pet lizard. Together, the team battles moles, metal-infused bats, interdimensional monsters, all in an effort to become the ultimate samurai Usagi.

“It is a pleasure working with Gaumont and Netflix. I am involved in each step of the production and am enthusiastic with the direction we are going into,” said Sakai. “It is wonderful to expand the Usagi universe by collaborating with so many talented people. I am working with an awesome team and I’m looking forward to finally seeing a Usagi series on the screen! I thank my wonderful fans, friends and family for their support and encouragement over the last 35-plus years.”

Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles will presumably debut in 2021, exclusively on Netflix. Stay tuned for updates!
