A 10-episode, straight-to-series order of a Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, is heading to HBO, per creators George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal.

Both Condal and Miguel Sapochnik will serve as showrunners, while both Martin and Vince Gerardis will executive produce the upcoming series.

The show will be based on the Martin novel, Fire & Blood (A Targaryen History), which is set 300 years before the events in GoT. It centers on the House Targaryen, in Westeros, who is the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria, and takes up residence on Dragonstone.

“The Game of Thrones universe is so rich with stories,” says Casey Bloys, President, HBO Programming. “We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan and George.”

Game of Thrones, which ran from 2011-19 (73 episodes), is bound for the network’s new streaming service, HBO Max, in 2020. The upcoming prequel series, House of the Dragon, is currently slated for a 2021 debut on HBO.
