The cult classic and fan-favorite horror film franchise, Maniac Cop, will be rebooted by HBO, in conjunction with showrunner Nicolas Winding Refn and his production studio, byNWR Originals, as an ongoing TV series.

The series will surely be modeled after the film franchise, which launched in 1988, with Maniac Cop. The film follows a disgraced cop-turned-killer, Matt Cordell (Robert Z’Dar), dressed in a police uniform, who begins murdering innocent people on the streets of New York City. It stars Tom Atkins, Bruce Campbell and Laurene Landon.

Maniac Cop 2 (1990) returns Z’Dar as Cordell, a supernatural, maniacal killer cop, but this time who teams up with a Times Square serial killer. The detective tabbed to take him on is Robert Davi, as Det. Sean McKinney. Other returning cast includes: Campbell and Landon, while Claudia Christian and Michael Lerner are fitted into the fold as well.

The saga comes to a close with the third installment, Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence (1993). In this one, which Campbell and Landon are noticeably absent from, a female cop is gunned down and wrongly accused of using excessive force in a hostage rescue attempt. The maniacal Cordell (Z’Dar) returns from the dead once more to seek revenge, destroying everything and anyone that stands in his way, especially Det. McKinney (Davi). This one also stars Caitlin Dulany and Paul Gleason.

Production will begin in 2020, with eyes set for a series premiere in 2021. Whether this will air on HBO or its upcoming streaming service, HBO Max, has yet to be determined. Stay tuned to Galaxtic Pop for updates!
