A backdoor-pilot production order to a prequel series to The 100, which is entering its final season, its seventh overall, is in the works, also at The CW.

The project, which is being spearheaded by The 100 showrunner Jason Rothenberg, will set events into place with the upcoming season, while the prequel will be set 97 years before the events of the original series. It starts with the end of the world, after a nuclear apocalypse that wipes clean most of the human population on Earth, while centering on a band of survivors as they learn to cope in a dangerous world while fighting to create a new and better society from the ashes of what came before.

The 100 centers on a group of post-apocalyptic survivors, in the future and roaming space, who are looking for a fresh start, on the ground. They are among a group from a space habitat, the Ark, who return to Earth after a devastating nuclear apocalypse.

The show launched in 2014 and currently sits at 100 episodes. The upcoming seventh and final season will span over 16 episodes and is scheduled to premiere in early 2020.
