Filmmakers Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have both been tabbed to direct the fifth installment in the Scream franchise, which will reboot the series, per an announcement from Spyglass Media, which is spearheading the project, in conjunction with Lantern Entertainment.

The film will serve as a reimagining, based off the original slasher franchise, which challenged horror cliches and rejuvenated the slasher genre. It began in 1996 with Scream (1996), to extreme success, resulting in three more sequels, Scream 2 (1997), Scream 3 (2000) and Scream 4 (2011). Its popularity has not wavered, however, as it was also adapted for television at MTV in, Scream: The TV Series, which ran from 2015-19.

Much has yet to be revealed regarding the project, but the Scream 5 IMDb page lists a brief synopsis that it will center on a woman, who returns home to try and figure out who has been committing a series of vicious murders.

Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett have both garnered success with 2019’s Ready or Not. The two also teamed on the horror anthology film, V/H/S (2012).
