A new animated, large-scale prequel film to Transformers is en route, as Josh Cooley has been enlisted by Paramount, in conjunction with Hasbro‘s eOne studio, to helm the project.

The upcoming film is rumored to serve as an origin story and will take place on Cybertron. It will center on the dynamic between Optimus Prime and Megatron, leading up to the dissension between the Autobots and Decepticons, all while the planet’s impending doom looms over the species.

The 1986 film, The Transformers: The Movie, which spinned out of the then-ongoing Saturday morning cartoon series, The Transformers (1984-87), centered on the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons, specifically after the species arrived on Earth, in competing against a planet-consuming robot.

Cooley jumped onto the scene with his breakout directorial debut on Toy Story 4 in 2019. His prior works include writing and directing television shorts, as well as series.

No news yet as to when production on this upcoming project begins, but stay tuned!
