The first trailer has arrived for the live-action adaptation of Lovecraft County, courtesy of HBO, and there are plenty of scares in Jim Crow’s America.

The upcoming series, based on the novel, Lovecraft County, by Matt Ruff, follows Atticus Freeman, played by Jonathan Majors, in conjunction with his friend, Letitia Dandridge (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), along with his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance), as the trio sets out on a road trip in 1950s America. The team is in search of Freeman’s father, Montrose (Michael Kenneth Williams), who has been missing. Along the way, the struggle for survival becomes real, as they encounter racism and even terrifying monsters!

Both J.J. Abrams and Jordan Peele serve as showrunners, while the rest of the core cast in the eight-episode pilot season includes: Abbey Bell, Chase Brown, Aunjanue Ellis, Marcus A. Griffin Jr, Wunmi Mosaku and Jada Harris.

Lovecraft County is currently slated to debut on HBO in August.
