Filmmaker Nia DaCosta has been selected to direct the forthcoming Captain Marvel sequel for Marvel Studios, which will begin filming in early- to mid-2021.

Much is still being kept under wraps with the plot for the sequel, but it is rumored that the film’s antagonist could be the X-Men‘s Rogue. Based on the comics, the two have quite the history, which includes the mutant having ‘stolen’ select powers (and unwanted memories) from Carol Danvers in an altercation between the two.

No news yet as to whether the film will take place in the 90s, like its predecessor, but Megan McDonnell is penning the script. The first film garnered $1.1 billion at the global box office and the sequel, should it include mutants, would absolutely surpass that number.

DaCosta made her directorial debut in 2018 with the indie breakout, Little Woods. She also helmed the upcoming Candyman reboot, which is due in October, 2020.

Captain Marvel 2 is currently slated for a summer, 2022, theatrical release.
